January 2021 numbers update

The new year is off to a good start. It was still very warm weather for the first half, before we started getting loads of rain these past 2 weeks.

We didn’t do too much outdoor exploring for half of the time due to lockdowns, but we did get some family time in.

Time for a quick update on how the numbers look for January in terms of personal financials.

Financial update

On the net worth front it wasn’t a bad month. Overall our liquid net worth grew by $19k to a new total of $1.06m. I don’t include the home in the net worth since it’s already benefiting us through lower expenses. Most of the growth was in broad-based equity funds, although some of it was offset by USD strength.

Investment income for the month was decent at $2.3k comprised of mostly dividends with some fixed income coming through. We didn’t generate any other income besides from investments.

Expenses were slightly higher than average. Increase on some food expenses due to some family staying with us or eating out, but otherwise not unreasonable at $2.5k for the month. Breakdown of that would be:

  • 40% to food and groceries including pet food and dining out.
  • 25% to household expenses like utilities, levies, taxes, cleaning staff, maintenance and any new furnishings/plants.
  • 20% to medical and other insurance.
  • 15% to everything else.

We have no debt or house/car payments to make. As noted I don’t count the house (or the car) in our net worth. I paid the large expense for both of those items when we bought them.

Projects

The hunt for a business continues. Did some desktop research on two new businesses – a private school and an engineering shop, but their financials were not of decent quality to bother exploring further. The brokers continue to send new businesses to my inbox.

I’m enjoying this new website, so far my stats for January are:

  • 76 visitors
  • 10 posts published

So thanks to those readers that have looked at my early attempt at a website!

Overall I was pleased with January and looking forward to the rest of 2021. Hope it’s a great one for everyone.
